Long term results of Isthmus preserving total bilobectomy (IPTB) as the optimized treatment for C-cell hyperplasia

Dietl Carlo , Koch Babette , Vorlander Christian , Wahl Robert A

Background: The thyroid isthmus contains no C-cells, thus we established IPTB for cases with nodular goiter and moderate hypercalcitonemia (stimulated up to 350 pg/ml). In these cases C-Cell-Hyperplasia is the primary pathologic correlate. Exclusion criteria were pre- or intraoperative signs of malignancy. We furthermore established IPTB as a prophylactic operation for patients with hereditary medullary thyroid carcinoma, excluding high-risk mutations.</p...

Histopathological and molecular studies in patients with goiter and hypercalcitoninemia: reactive or neoplastic C-cell hyperplasia?

Verga Uberta , Ferrero Stefano , Vicentini Leonardo , Brambilla Tatiana , Cirello Valentina , Muzza Marina , Beck-Peccoz Paolo , Fugazzola Laura

The cut-off values able to differentiate between reactive or neoplastic C cell hyperplasia (CCH) or to predict sporadic medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) are still debated both for basal and stimulated calcitonin (bCT and sCT). Aim of the present study was to define the prevalence and the histological patterns of CCH in 15 patients with multinodular goiter (MNG), bCT>10 pg/ml and sCT levels >50 pg/ml. These data were compared with those from 16 patients with MNG and bCT l...

Aetiology and therapeutic guideines in thyrid dysfunction at the patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin

Cijevschi Cristina , Mihai Catalina , Zbranca Eusebie , Brumaru Andreea , Gogalniceanu Paul

Introduction: Chronic Hepatitis C is highly prevalent in our country.Management involves combination treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin. Thyroid disease in affected patients can be caused by the hepatitis C virus or by the interferon therapy.Aims and method: The study aims to investigate thyroid dysfunction and optimal management strategies for patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with pegylated interferon and r...

Prevalence and risk factors of diabetes in chronic viral hepatitis B and C: about a retrospective study

Boukhayatia Fatma , Aissaoui Dhilel , Kchir Hela , Nakhli Abdelwaheb , Yacoub Haythem , Maamouri Nedia , Mami Nabil Ben

Introduction: Carbohydrate metabolism disorders are common in chronic liver diseases, from glucose intolerance to proven diabetes. The presence of diabetes during chronic liver disease is a factor of poor prognosis. The purpose of our study is to assess the prevalence of diabetes in chronic hepatitis B and C and to determine the risk factors.Patients and methods: This is a retrospective study that collects all cases of chronic hepatitis hospitalized in t...

Epithelial to mesenchymal transition in adrenocortical tumours: focus on FGF-FGFR pathway and c-MET

Sbiera Iuliu , Altieri Barbara , Feuchtinger Annette , Hofner Kerstin , Walch Axel , Fassnacht Martin , Ronchi Cristina L , Kroiss Matthias , Sbiera Silviu

Ad Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is an aggressive tumour and treatment remains unsatisfactory in advanced disease. Activation of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is considered causative for metastatic spread in a variety of human cancers. Accordingly, new drugs were developed specifically targeting EMT with a focus on hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)/HGF receptor (c-MET) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF)/FGF receptor (FGFR) signalling. We here a...

Effect of pharmacological interventions on lipid profiles and C-reactive protein in polycystic ovary syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abdalla Mohammed , Shah Najeeb , Deshmukh Harshal , Sahebkar Amirhossein , Ostlundh Linda , Al-Rifai Rami H. , Atkin Stephen L , Sathyapalan Thozhukat

Context: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous condition affecting women of reproductive age. It is associated with dyslipidaemia and elevated plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), which increase the risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD).Objective: To review the existing evidence on the effects of different pharmacological interventions on lipid profiles of women with PCOS.Data sources: We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus,...

Usefulness of Ki-67, PCNA, c-erbB-2 and CK 19 in the diagnosis of some thyroid follicular tumors

Zosin Ioana , Cornianu Marioara , Golu Ioana , Balas Melania , Milos Aurora

This study represents a complex evaluation of a group of 26 cases with thyroid nodular disease (TND), using different diagnostic methods. Clinically and by means of ultrasonography, 12 patients were suspected of malignancy. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) detected mainly suspicious (12 cases) and malignant smears (5 cases). The microscopic examination of surgical specimens established the following diagnosis: follicular adenoma – FA (4 cases), papillary hyperplasia &...

Predictive factors for thyroid function abnormalities in patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin

Cijevschi Cristina , Mihai Catalina , Zbranca Eusebie , Gogalniceanu Paul

Introduction: Chronic hepatitis C has a high incidence in our country being a major public health issue.Aims and methods: To establish prognostic factors for developing thyroid dysfunction in patients with chronic hepatitis C receiving pegylated interferon and ribavirin therapy. A prospective study of patients with chronic hepatitis C on antiviral therapy was undertaken. 68 patients started on antiviral therapy in the period 1st January 2003 – 1st J...

Somatostatin analogue treatment for hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia with glucokinase activating mutation (GCK), c.295T>C (p.Trp99Arg)

Boguslawska Anna , Rzepka Ewelina , Kluczyński Lukasz , Hubalewska-Dydejczyk Alicja , Gilis-Januszewska Aleksandra

Somatostatin analogues (SSA) are used to treat different forms of hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia (HH) in children and adults and therapeutic effect is achieved by suppressing insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells by complex mechanisms. These treatments might be associated with several side effects, can even cause the worsening of severity of hypoglycemia. This is a report of the treatment of HH with SSA in patient with Activating Mutation (GCK), c.295T>C (p.Trp99Ar...

MMP-9 1562 C/T polymorphism may be associated with an increased susceptibility to develop micropapillary thyroid cancer but not more advanced tumours

Dobrescu Ruxandra , Schipor Sorina , Picu Catalina , Manda Dana , Caragheorgheopol Andra , Badiu Corin

Background: Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is an important mediator of invasion and metastasis in neoplasia. The single nucleotide 1562 C/T polymorphism in the promoter region of the MMP-9 genewas shown to increase gene expression and was studied as a susceptibility factor for various cancers.Aim: We aimed to evaluate the impact of the MMP-9 promoter genotype on the risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and to correlate cancer patient gen...
